CAN I PLAY A CANON CHARACTER?
DO I NEED TO PICK A JAPANESE PB?
No. All canon characters are NPCs. The playable characters in this game are all otaku senshi, or original characters.
No! In fact, non-Japanese PBs are highly encouraged. The students attending ILLUME ACADEMIE are from all over the galaxy. It would be weird if everyone was inexplicably Asian.
DOES MY CHARACTER NEED TO HAVE A JAPANESE NAME?
'TSUKINO USAGI' MEANS 'RABBIT OF THE MOON.' DOES MY CHARACTER NEED TO HAVE A SIMILARLY MEANINGFUL NAME?
Again, no. Notice that a lot of the villains from Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon don't have Japanese names, save for the few that pick up an alias to better blend in with society. That's because the villains are from other planets, where Japanese is not the native tongue. The sailor soldiers have Japanese names in BSSM, because they were reborn on Earth. In other words, unless your soldier was born in Japan, she's probably not going to have a Japanese name. And if she was born in Japan, she's probably not a sailor soldier, because Earth's sailor crystal belongs to Tuxedo Kamen!
Actually, Tsukino Usagi does not mean "rabbit of the moon." It sounds like "rabbit of the moon," but that is not the direct translation of the name. Sorry, just a nitpick! In any case, meaningful names are nice, but not mandatory. Keep in mind that English names, on the whole, don't work like Japanese ones. "Rose Duncan" does not mean "Rose of the dark-skinned warrior," because there is no word in there meaning "of the." You'd be hard pressed to find a single English name with a coherent meaning.
WHAT CANON ARE WE FOLLOWING?
DOES MY CHARACTER NEED TO COME FROM A REAL PLANET?
I like the manga, personally, since I feel it carries more adult overtones than its animated counterpart, but at times things may be borrowed from the anime. The one canon we are not following is Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, because ... well, it's a bit silly, honestly. Rest assured, the game will be executed in such a way that very little knowledge of any of the canons will be needed in order to play.
No. There are many fictional planets mentioned in the Sailor Moon manga, such as Mau, the planet Luna and Artemis hail from. Though not technically a planet, the Starlights are from Kinmoku, a fictional star. Be creative!
DID YOU KNOW PLUTO IS NO LONGER A PLANET? DOES THAT MEAN PLUTO IS NO LONGER A SAILOR SOLDIER?
WAIT, SAILOR QUARTETTO?
That statement is incorrect. Pluto is still a planet—a dwarf planet, but a planet nonetheless. In any case, it's been proven time and time again that sailor soldiers do not necessarily have to come from a planet, per se. The Sailor Quartetto from the SuperS and Infinity arcs of the manga do not have a planet associated with them; instead, they represent asteroids that were once thought of as planets. Likewise, the Sailor Starlights come from what they call a star, Kinmoku.
This is the term for the four girls formerly known as the Amazones Quartetto, who were revealed to be Sailor Soldiers during the Infinity arc of the manga. Much of the Sailor Moon fandom refers to them as the Amazoness Quartet, but it is likely that this term is not what Naoko Takeuchi intended: Amazones Quartetto is more accurate. This is discussed in-depth over at Dies Gaudii, a fansite which debunks many misconceptions in the Sailor Moon fandom.
WHY DID YOU USE THE DUTCH WORD FOR ACADEMY?
GOT A QUESTION NOT ANSWERED HERE?
Something that was lost in the translation of BSSM was Naoko Takeuchi's love of loan words. For example, the term Amazones Quartetto borrows both Greek and Italian words, and Neptune had an attack featuring a violon, the French word for violin. By including the Dutch word "academie," I feel that the game captures some of the original feel of the series.
